[edit] About Lothlórien
Lothórien is a community of appox. 36 people (students, activists, workers & others), along with 5 cats who share a large yellow castle on the shore of Lake Mendota.
Since our founding in 1973, Lothlorien Co-op has striven to provide a welcoming & supportive atmosphere for people of all ages, sexes, races and sexual orientations. Many of our housemembers are politically active in queer rights, labor rights, environmental & feminist movements, & our home is an open resource to activist groups like: Food Not Bombs, the PNC, Stop the War, Radical Cheerleaders, & the Madison Art Collective. We often host benefit concerts, fiestas, coffeehouses, & other events providing the city of Madison w/ good times. Based in egalitarian ideals, house decisions are made through Formal Consensus at weekly Elven Council meetings.
Indoors: Loth has a huge living room that is 860 sq. feet, library with 2,800 plus books, hard wood floors, 5-story spiral staircase, fireplaces distributed throughout the house, multiple rooftop decks, a grand piano, 3 public computers, weight bench, 2 washers and dryers, wireless internet access and DSL in your room, free long distance phone calls in the continental USA. All but one of our 31 bedrooms are singles, however, doubling in rooms is welcome for an additional $50/mo (divided among the two tenants).
Outdoors: Our backyard has a stunning, hand-built terraced garden system; outdoor seating for lake-view meals; a lakeshore fire pit; a dock; & two canoes. We also have a large passive solar water heating system.
Location: We have a great location on Lake Mendota within close walking distance of the Capitol, UW-Madison and MATC campuses, and bus lines.
FOOD: We cook vegetarian meals nightly with a vegan option. Nearly all food at Loth is organic with most produce locally grown! Interested in eating both politically & health consciously, but already have other housing plans? You can still food membership at Loth for $93/mo.
