Housemother At Norris hall is "fired"

Mrs. belle Schulman, housemother at Norris hall (formerly Dover house), was relieved of her position yesterday by Raiman J. Feldman, owner of the Georgian Group of houses. Norris hall is a women's independent organized house. Mrs. Schulman said she and Feldman sent for her yesterday, she said, and told her to leave as soon as possible. He said he "couldn't work with me," Mrs. Schulman explained.

When first questioned by the Cardinal, Feldman Said, "I haven't fired anyone. I don't know anything ad I have no comment."

Later in the day he admitted Mrs. Schulman was leaving but said it was "by mutual agreement. There are no other reasons," he Said.

Earle Zaidins, first year law student and a friend of Mrs. Schulman, said he would meet with Feldman this afternoon to discuss an "amiable settlement."

Two groups of Norris hall girls visited Feldman yesterday to speak in favor of Mrs. Schulman. June Freedman, house president, said she and two other officers saw him in the afternoon but "had the door closed in our faces."

"Many girls are ready to leave, if Mr. Feldman ca break his contract, we can break ours," she said.

Last night a 12-girl group called on the owner.

"he slammed the door on us again and caught one girl's elbow in the door." Naomi Feller said, "From inside the house we heard hum say, 'Let them all pack up and get the heck out. They'll take what ever housemother I give them'"

Mrs. Schulman said Feldman had offered her two months advance salary plus transportation when he relieved her. She said the had asked him if he would pay her living expenses until she could find a new position. Feldman answered, she said, that the mater could be decided in court if she wanted.

Both Otto Muelller, director of university housing, and Mrs. Louise had conferred with Feldman last night. Mrs. Troxell said Feldman Had told her Mrs. Schulman was "inefficient."

Mrs. Belle Schulman, housemother of Norris hall is being retained at her present position as the result of an agreement reached late yesterday with houseowner Raiman J. Feldman.

Feldman had asked Mrs. Schulman to leave last week because he "couldn't work with" her. However, after meeting with Earle Zaidins, a law student friend of Mrs. Schulman, to discuss an "amiable settlement", Feldman out forth a proposition which both he and Mrs. Schulman agreed to give a three day trial. Feldman returned from out of town late Thursday, and yesterday the new settlement was reached.

(Mrs Helen Engel is Supervisor of Women's Housing)

Because Mr. Feldman is planning to leave tomorrow for Florida, Mrs. Engel asked him to stop at the office to discuss the inspection reports of his two houses. He was vary pleased with the report on the Lack Lawn House, and said it was not at all surprised about the negative report on the housekeeping at Norris hall. he feels vary discouraged about the fact that the work in Norris Hall has not been well managed for the fall. He said he had just come from there, and disappointed to see that the housemother had permitted the residents to construct the homecoming decorations in the living room. They had the decorations scattered all over the room, were sawing 2 by 4's in the middle of the living room rug, and were using his newly upholstered furniture for racks to hold the Homecoming decorations. At other houses down Langdon Street, he explained, they are making Homecoming decorations outside the house, or at least i the basement recreation rooms, which are better suited for this purpose.

Mr. Feldman said he wished that he had as much faith in the ability of the Norris Hall housemother to carry on as Mrs. Troxell has, and that he sincerely hopes Mrs. Troxell is right in her evaluation. he is planning to have Mrs. Wood of Norris Hall report to Mrs. Mellon of Lake Law on major decisions concerning Norris Hall, and has asked that they work together in planning their menus and buying supplies. Mrs. Engel discussed with Mr. Feldman the problem concerning the double decker beds on the 4th floor of Norris hall where the students have Requested permission to take their beds down and use them as singles. He said that the fathers of two of the girls had, without his knowledge or permission, taken the double deckers apart in the fall and placed them on the floor as singles. They did not place coasters under the beds, and as a result, the asphalt tile floors were damaged by the metal legs before Mr. Feldman discovered what had happened. He placed the beds back in their original position as double deckers and told the girls that he wanted them to remain that way. Therefore, he said in this conference with Mrs. Engel, he still expected the girls to leave their beds as double deckers fer reasons of better room arrangement, more adequate floor space, and continuation of a policy which he had definitely established in the house - he requests that the beds be left as double deckers.

Mrs. Engel said she would inform the girls of hes dicision.
