[edit] The Summit Avenue Cooperative
About:
Seventeen people currently live in the Summit Avenue Cooperative. Approximately 1/3 of us are students, and we are ages 19 to 61. We spend a moderate amount of time together, from the occaisonal outings (to dinner, custard, observatories, walks, etc.) to the more homely chatting by the fire, playing games together, enjoying the outdoors and other exciting things. We are each independent, but we support eachother and have positive, healthy relationships (which is vital for any thriving community!)
The Community:
Some things about Summit that seperate us from other Madison housing cooperatives are that we have more long-term residents (Frank has been here for over 30 years), that we put a lot of care into our physical property, and that we are a very diverse house (in terms of age, politics, sexual orientation, religion, etc). Oh, and we also welcome long-distance membershippers! We maintain an approximately half male, half female ratio and welcome anyone to give us a call or email! (see the bottom of this page)
Day To Day:In terms of our nuts and bolts functioning, we each do about 5 hours of labor per week (4 hours of self-selected work jobs, plus 1 hour of dishes/floors). We share veggie, mostly local/organic dinners at 6:00pm on Sunday through Thursday nights, and have short meetings once every 2.5 weeks. Our meetings are run in accordance with Robert's Rules, and house decisions are made by majority vote - except for membershipping (which is 100% consensus). We each pay $301 - $450/month (Rent/Food/Utilities combined!) depending on the size of our room.
Our House:
Summit is a large house perched at the peak of University Heights, just west of Randall Stadium. Next to the large house is an empty lot we also own, which hosts a large hill garden, a large grassy area to play in (and dry clothes in) and a gravel parking lot. The house is three stories with ample common areas and 14 bedrooms (3 of which are large doubles). We are independent and self-sustaining.
