Top Ten Reasons not to cross a CoCo Member

1. Any member of the Coordinating Committee has the authority to ask that your contract remain unsigned for any reason. Maybe you vocally disagreed with a policy or practice, maybe your dog ate one of their prized chrysanthemums, maybe you merely pointed out that a black belt with brown shoes will never be fashionable. If a member of the Coordinating Committee takes any of these things the wrong way, you might just end up homeless. But don't worry, nobody would ever kick someone out of their home because of interpersonal conflict or a dispute over how our organization is run, and besides you'll always be able to appeal this request at an Individual Issues Committee meeting. Well...

2. Our established forum for appeals, the Individual Issues Committee, is chaired by the Member Services Coordinator and the President, both voting members on (cue trumpets) the Coordinating Committee! You have the right to appeal directly to your accusers. Better hope they haven't already made up their minds. Better hope you've got a good defense, because the burden of proof lies squarely on Y-O-U.

3. The Coordinating Committee sets the agenda for the board meetings. While it's not legal, they can come up with a plentitude of reasons your proposal can't be on the agenda. Just try bringing a proposal to remove one of them from his/her position. I'll give ya two guesses as to whether or not it ever gets seen by the board.

4. People tend to look towards those already in power for the answers. It doesn't matter how many times you've read the policy manual. The majority of people haven't, and they'll be looking towards a CoCo member for the answers. If the Coordinating Committee says there's no room for interpretation, it's unlikely anyone will value the opinion of a lowly member over an officer's. The instant credibility of a position of authority works to maintain the authority of those in power.
